National History Day

Aug 20, 2021

Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Johnson and Cedar Counties, Iowa, the National Archives and Records Administration has closed the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch beginning Monday, August 23, 2021. We are making every effort to continue providing essential services and respond to inquiries at hoover.library@nara.gov. Our E-Store services are suspended until our staff are able to work on-site. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Read more.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum is committed to National History Day and to helping students with their projects. Before you begin work on an entry for competition, you, your teacher, and your parents should carefully read the Contest Rule Book.

Every year National History Day® frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. This year’s theme is Conflict and Compromise in History. The intentional selection of the theme for NHD is to provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.
