SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Steve Neal Papers document his research and writing of several books on 20th century American politics, his work as a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, and include photographs of national figures.

three series:  Books, Subject File, and Photographs.

Books
drafts, research files, and correspondence. These are first arranged alphabetically by book title: Dark Horse, The Eisenhowers, Eleanor and Harry, Harry and Ike, and McNary of Oregon.  Each book is then arrayed so that drafts, revisions and final copies of the text are the first materials in each sub-series.  Research files and correspondence files follow.  Documentation for each book varies from extensive for Dark Horse, Neal’s book on Wendell Willkie) to modest for his volumes on Harry S. Truman.

Subject Files
documents Neal’s work as a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times.   These files contain extensive material on Chicago and Illinois politics, gambling in Chicago, Jesse Jackson, and Oregon politics.

Photographs [transferred to AV department, 2010]
These are arranged alphabetically by individual and primarily contain images of 20th century American politicians.
