BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Hugh R. Wilson was born in 1885 at Evanston, Illinois, graduated from Yale University in 1906, and married Katharine Bogle in 1914. Wilson served in numerous positions for the Foreign Service from 1911 to 1941, with notable postings in Berlin and Tokyo before serving as the Ambassador to Germany from 1938 to 1939. From 1927 to 1933 Wilson was a representative at a number of conferences concerned with the limitation of armaments. Wilson died in 1946.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The papers primarily contain correspondence with state department staff and diplomats from 1923 to 1940 and are arranged alphabetically by name. The collection also contains Wilson’s diaries for 1938 and 1940, speeches, an essay on an earthquake in Japan, and drafts of two books written by Hugh R. Wilson, Jr. about his father. There is a subject index to the papers.
