BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Elco Lanier Greenshields was an agricultural economist with the Agriculture Department from 1935 to 1963. He specialized in the study of land use and development policies in the United States. Later he worked for the World Bank (1963-1968), the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (1968-1973), and as a consultant to the World Bank and several UN agencies (1973-1988). Greenshields died in 1989 at the age of 78.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection contains correspondence, memos, reports, studies, articles, speeches and printed matter documenting Elco Greenshields’ professional career. Topics from his work with the Department of Agriculture include: farm tenancy, land rehabilitation, and the concentration of control over agricultural land. His later work mainly concerned agricultural development projects around the world including: Afghanistan, Brazil, Columbia, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Turkey, and Yemen.
