CHARLES B. COATES PAPERS, 1948-1970 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Charles B. Coates was educated at Rutgers and worked from 1929-1945 as a reporter and editor for the Associated Press, the New York American, and other publications. In 1945 he was appointed as Public Relations Director for General Foods. In November 1948 Coates was appointed as Assistant to Chairman and Editorial Director of the Commission on Organization of the Executive Branch of the Government (First Hoover Commission). His duties included publicity, editing, and preparing reports. Coates served on both Hoover Commissions and as Executive Vice Chairman on the Citizens Committee for the Hoover Report. He later co-founded a public relations company, Coates and McCormick Inc. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection documents Coates’ work for the Hoover Commissions, the Citizens Committee, and his public relations firm. Materials include: reports, correspondence, research memos, clippings, articles, press releases, newsletters, pamphlets, and photographs. The Hoover Reports mention the background of the organization, but focus on findings and results, detailing recommendations pertaining to the Executive Branch Departments and personnel. Citizens Committee material tracks the legislative status of Commission recommendations and bills. Correspondence from the public relations years reveals Coates’ concern for Hoover’s image and the propriety of his various dealings and public appearances.
