RUTH SARLES BENEDICT PAPERS, 1897-1996 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Ruth Sarles Benedict was a peace activist with the National Council for Prevention of War who worked with the America First Committee as Senate lobbyist and chief researcher. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection primarily contains business correspondence for the America First Committee that served as the genesis of her history of the organization. Includes documents from December 1941 which show the response of America First to the attack on Pearl Harbor. There are also several items pertaining to the topic of isolationism. An abridged version of Benedict’s history A Story of America First was published in 2003. RELATED MATERIALS There is a complete 1942 typescript of A Story of America First in the Wayne S.
