Biographical Note

Richard Wilson was a highly respected journalist during his time of reporting for the Des Moines Register and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune as chief Washington Correspondent. He was born in Galesburg, IL on September 3rd, 1905, but would later move to Newton, IA where he considered his true home.  He went to college at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1926 with a degree in Journalism. He started off his career by reporting for the Des Moines Register in 1926 and then briefly worked for the St. Louis Globe Democrat in 1928 before returning to the Register that same year. and later wrote for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and the Register in 1933 for 4 decades. During his time writing his column he would know on a first name basis Presidents from Roosevelt to Nixon. Wilson also wrote for Look magazine. Wilson gave up his Chief Washington Correspondent in 1970 but continued to write for the paper until 1975.

Wilson won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the FBI in the Harry Drexler White case. Richard Wilson was very active in the Gridiron Club.

Wilson married Katherine Macy, who was the managing editor of the Daily Iowan in Iowa City. They had two children Susan and Katherine. Richard Wilson died on January 18, 1981.

            Primarily drafts and printed copies of the articles and columns written by Wilson and
            other members of the Washington bureau of Cowles Publications. This series also
            includes daily schedules of articles, correspondence, memoranda, and notes. Additional
