BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

1889 Oct 2   Born in Mason City, Iowa. Son of Charles Henry and May Hanford MacNider.

1907             Graduated from Milton Academy

1911             Graduated from Harvard

1916‑17        Mexican border service with the Iowa National Guard

1917‑19        Service with the AEF in France, advancing to grade of Lt. Col.

1920‑21        State Commander of the American Legion

1921‑22        National Commander of the American Legion

1922             Declined offer of Senate appointment by Governor Nate Kendall.

1924 Aug      One of the founders of the Republican Service League

1925 Feb 20 Married Margaret McAuley

1925‑28        Appointed AssistantSecretary of War (Acting Secretary of War: Sep‑Oct, 1926)

1925‑30        Member of the George Washington Bicentennial Commission

1928             Receives serious consideration as a Vice‑Presidential candidate

1930‑3 2       Appointed Minister to Canada. Negotiated St. Lawrence River Treaty

1932             Vice‑Presidential candidate

1940             Favorite son candidate for GOP presidential nomination. Declined Wendell
                     Willkie's request that he serve as Willkie's running mate. Delegate at large to
                     GOP National Convention.

1941             Opposed lend‑lease bill. Member of America First Committee resigned on
                     December 4.

1941‑45        Immediately following Pearl Harbor he insisted on being recalled to active duty.
                     Promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in August, 1942. He was wounded
                     while commanding the Buna Task Force in New Guinea. After a lengthy
                     recuperation he was given command of the 158th Regimental Combat Team
                     (Bushmasters) and assigned the task of clearing the vital Bicol Peninsula.

1947‑51        Commanding General, 103rd Infantry Division (OR). Promoted to Maj. General
                     on Mar 31, 1949 and retired as a Major General (USAR) on Sep 30, 1951.

1952             Declined cabinet post in the Eisenhower administration.

1956             Advanced to rank of Lt. General on the retired list

1968 Feb 18 Died while on vacation, in Sarasota, Florida
