the Arts of China

A deep respect for tradition is found within all of Chinese art. Formulas have been copied from the masters for centuries and passed on to successive generations as a way to honor master artists, and also for study and practice. In contrast to much of the work created by Western artists, originality is not emphasized in traditional Chinese art. The artist does not wish to violate the "qi" or inner spirit of the artwork by adding too much individual expression.
