The First, First Lady from Iowa

Lou Henry Hoover became the First Lady when her husband, Herbert, became the President. During the years they lived in the White House (1929-1933), Mrs. Hoover made it as much like a home as she could. We call her the first, First Lady of Iowa because she was born in Waterloo, Iowa. The picture shows Mrs. Hoover when she was about six years old.

Another First Lady, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, wife of President Dwight David Eisenhower, was also from Iowa. She was born in Boone, Iowa on November 14, 1896. Her family also lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to Denver, Colorado. She was the First Lady from 1953-1961.
